The education imparted to adults, who are totally illiterate or partially literate, is known as Adult Education. In India, this movement has gained momentum in recent years.

Education For Adults The objective of this type Education is to impart education to those people who haven’t got proper school education in their childhood. The reasons for their not being literates can be varied. Under compulsions of poverty they might have been denied (of) the opportunity of schooling in their early age. In some other cases, social restraints might have created hurdles. There might have been adverse personal or family circumstances to prevent them from going to school. Some children have to earn their living at a time when they ought to be in schools. There are also some cases where a person neglected his studies in his childhood and realized its value later. Adult Education provides all such persons an opportunity to learn to read and write. They learn a little arithmetic also. Under this scheme, they get introduced to the wonderful world of letters.

Difference between adult education and conventional education:

Adult education is entirely different from conventional education. Learners are children in conventional education. They have no other vocation than learning. They can devote their full time and energies for this purpose. Therefore, conventional education imparted in self established schools of teaching, and the method of examination is also different. The main purpose of the school education is to prepare students for higher studies. In the case of adult education, the learners are grown-up people. They are the bread-winners of their families. Therefore, the time they can spend on their learning is limited. Besides, the timings have to be set according to their convenience. They cannot attend the classes at working hours. So adult education centres normally function at night or on holidays.

The objective of the adults attending these centres is just to learn reading, writing and a little arithmetic. They want to learn things which have use in their practical life. They will be contented if they are able to write a letter to a friend or a relative, or read one received by them. They may want to read a newspaper, or a document that concerns them or some stories for entertainment. They will require only simple arithmetic of practical use. The education imparted under adult education programme is according to these requirements of the learners.

An ambitious programme of the Government:

This type Of education in India is an ambitious programme of the Government. For this purpose there are many centres throughout the country. Grownup people who are illiterates, are encouraged through advertisements on radio and television to join these centres. The virtues of education are highlighted through these advertisements. Voluntary organisations and educational institutions have also come forward to assist the Government in this noble cause.

Benefits:

This education is beneficial for people in more than one way. It introduces to the luminous world of letters to the illiterates. It opens their eyes to truth. They will be able to discern right and wrong, justice and injustice, the reasonable and the unreasonable. They will come to know about social evils and get ready to fight them. The exploitation of the poor will come to an end. They will become bold and confident to demand their rights. Eradication of social evils is very necessary for the progress of the nation.
