Almond the king of nuts and nut of kings is found almost in all the countries, but is cultivated in some of the few countries as you know such as Morocco, Italy, France, Portugal, California and Australia. This nut “almond” is cultivated in central Asian countries. In our Country India its cultivation is in Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh only. In Kashmir District Pulwama is famous for its cultivation because land is also suitable their for this.

It is a beautiful human eye shaped nut as we all know. That is why the poets in Kashmiri poetry use it as symbol of beautiful eyes of beloved “Chashmi Badam”. Its beautiful shape size and value has impressed our artists that is why they have embroidered it on the beautiful and costly Pashmina or Raffal Shawls. Its design can be found in Gabba, Namda & Carpet designs in beautiful colours. The almond design is common in our jewelry ornaments, wood carving, paper machie and metal work of utensils and decoration pieces. Almonds are among the best nuts, which Kashmiris use on auspicious occasions like marriages, new births and engagements etc.
It is a highly nutrition’s food, rich in almost all the elements needed by the body. It is an effective health building food, both for the body and mind, and a valuable food remedy for several common ailments.

There are two varieties of almonds, the sweet and the bitter. There are thick skinned and thin skinned in both the varieties. The thin-skinned “Kagzi” is the best variety. The bitter variety of almond contains prussic acid, a deadly poison. The bitter is used for almond oil, perfume and cosmetics.

The almond is having medicinal value. It helps in formation of new blood cells and helps in smooth physiological functions of brain, nerves, bones and liver.

It is used as beauty aid when its paste is mixed with milk cream and fresh rose buds paste. This paste is applied daily over the face. Its regular application prevents early appearance of wrinkles, blockheads, dryness of the skin, pimples and keeps the face fresh.

Almond oil mixed with Amla juice, massaged over scalp, is a valuable remedy for falling hair, thinness of hair, dandruff and premature graying of hair.

The use of almond is highly beneficial in the treatment of chronic constipation. An emulsion of almonds, is useful in bronchial diseases, hoarseness and tickling cough. A teaspoonful of almond oil given with 10 drops of white onion juice and 10 drops of ginger juice, daily thrice for 15 days is useful in whooping cough, bronchitis and Asthma.

The almond milk is rich in vitamins. It possesses certain advantages over the ordinary milk. It is useful for the children who are allergic to cows milk. 1kg of almond milk can be obtained from 250 grams of almond. It can be prepared by grinding the almond after pealing them to a smooth paste and adding cold boiled water and little sugar.

Above all these values and importance almond is the messenger of spring in Kashmir. It is the almond that blossoms first in the valley. In days forgotten now festival of “Badam Wari” was celebrated in Kashmir. It is a dream now written in books only.
