Co-Education

Traditionsalists vehemently oppose the coeducation system. Their opposition is based on our moral values. They see a potential threat to these values in the coeducation system in which girls and boys sit together to learn. It is dangerous to allow teen-agers of opposite sex to interact freely when they are too immature to control their emotions and to know about the consequences of their actions. In this age, the physical attraction towards each other will be strong and curiosity to know about the other stronger. They term it as an explosive age in which these students should be safeguarded from each other carefully. Another drawback, they perceive in this system is that students neglect their studies and devote more time to attract the attention of their fellow students of opposite sex. This tendency can violate discipline in educational institutions and result in violence, they fear.

Those who favour this system are also equally articulate in their arguments. They belong to the modern generation which is bold to demand change. They see things in a different perceptive and value them on merit. They find no threat to our cultural or moral values in this system. On the contrary, it helps to reduce sex related crimes. As boys and girls get opportunities to interact freely, they come to know better about persons belonging to opposite sex. Boys come to regard girls as individulas rather than instruments to satisfy the carnal desires. Therefore, each side develops some respect for the other. This respect will not allow their beastly urges to surface. They do not think coeducation promotes indiscipline. Boys or girls try to behave better before persons of opposite sex in order to win their respect. This will certainly improve discipline, they hold. As far as studies are concerned, coeducation creates a spirit of healthy competetion among students. Each student tries to excel others in studies. This is beneficial for students and institutions. As students of opposite sexes get to know better about each other, a lot of misconceptions are removed from their minds. This helps them to get rid of fear, doubts and shyness when they come in contact with people of opposite sexes. It will be very helpful in their social life.

From the above, it is clear that coeducation is not as bad as it is projected by some people. It has its own merits.
