Life Every one of us at some time or other, do think about the worth of living. That is whether the life is worth living. No unanimous yes or no can answer this question because our answer depends on our views and vision of life as a whole. Moments of joy fill us with an enthusiasm for life, but moments of suffering and depression prompt us to turn a philosophical and query the worth of life on this earth. Many philosophers have often wondered at the futility of human existence. Thomas Hardy states that “life is a general drama of pain and that happiness is just a cessation of pain”. The early Greek philosophers were equally tragic in their outlook.
Romantic poets of England emphasized the “Thorns of life”. Indian sages have regarded life on this earth as illusion or ‘Maya’ similarly Shakespeare’s Macbeth comments on the fleeting and futile human life that, “Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more, it is a tale, told, by idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”. On the contrary there are others who oppose the pessimistic denigrators of life, they feel life is worth living for various reasons. Hedonistic philosophers emphasize that it is only the pursuit of personal pleasure that makes life worth living. Some thinkers emphasize the pleasure of emotions. They speak of the beauty of human relations, of the feelings of a friend or a parent. The sublimity of nature or art is considered the only thing which makes life worth living.
It is not realistic to negate the life’s worth in a pessimistic manner. Life can hold much joy and happiness too. One should have a robust cheerful optimism. We should accept that life is not a bed of roses, it is also full of thorns but one should have ample courage to face all the difficulties and problems of life with a cheerful attitude. It is in the darkest hour of life that one should display his fortitude, for, “Grand success grows in the fertile soil of perseverance”. So make the best use of life and place the best possible examples before yourself. Let the best minds of the world mould your life and form your character. Try to set a good example for others. Let your actions be such that people should remember and love you even after your death.
It is undoubted fact that your future depends on the use you make of this life. Life is a big and golden opportunity. It will never again be offered to you. Make, therefore, the best use of it and rank among immortals of the world. Remember, “The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it”. A. You may be disappointed if you fail, But you are doomed if you don’t try.
